Involving the entire family

One potentially useful strategy is to hold family meetings where parents can answer questions, discuss important topics, and help their children to express their feelings. It is important to validate those feelings and to find positive ways to help them deal with their emotions.

If older siblings are involved in the discussions they will be more ready to accept the situation, and perhaps even contribute with ideas and solutions to problems. When the child with the hearing loss is old enough to participate, they should be included in family meetings as well.

Another useful strategy is to invite friends of siblings over to play. If you can be open, informative, and encourage them to ask questions, you will make it easier for them to accept that the child has a hearing loss.
